For Siblings of the Autistic, a Burdened Youth - When Mark Plage, 15,
forgets to padlock the door of his bedroom, his 13-year-old autistic
brother, Derek, barges in and leaves the place a shambles. When Mark tries
to toss a football with Derek, the boy turns his back and walks away.
Mark's mother, by her own admission, used to scream at him for the smallest
thing, unable to contain her frustration with Derek. Mark often wished she
would come to his ice hockey games with his father. But Debi Plage had to
stay home with her disabled son by Jane Gross / NY TImes |

HAPPIER ENDINGS - "...While others showed off a pet or a grandparent,
Julie brought in the district's autism expert. Her brother, A.J., 19, has

The invisible ones
- In the auditorium of the Miami Children's Hospital,
20 or more healthy 8 to 13-year-olds gather each month. It is for them a
time of fun - of games, crafts, lunch and a special sharing. Each is
the sibling (or, perhaps, a cousin) of a child with a health or
developmental need. Paul Puleo's sister has seizures. Emma
Ritter's brother has spina bifida. Karla Grullon's brother has Down
syndrome. Alejandra Avila's brother has cerebral palsy. Grace Kightley,
like most in the group, has an autistic brother. These kids, the
healthy ones, have unique issues that can be shared and understood in
Sibshops (as the group is known). |
