Autistic girl, 17, moved 28 times - A TEENAGE
girl was moved to 28 care homes before being diagnosed with a form of
autism, a court heard. The 17-year-old, who cannot be named for legal
reasons, lashed-out when she was told she would be moved, only days
since her previous move. The girl admitted damaging a PlayStation and
two walls when she appeared at Ely Youth Court. Ben Peers, mitigating,
said: "She was told she would be moved back to a previous care home
where there had been trouble with boys at the home. "That she had to go
back was, perhaps, the last straw for her." The girl was recently
diagnosed with semanticpragmatic disorder, which leads to difficulties
understanding the meaning of what other people say and understanding how
to use speech appropriately. Effective communication and the
understanding of instructions are impaired. - UK |

Autism group paedophile 'disgust'
- The National Autistic Society says it is "shocked and disgusted" at
the case of a paedophile jailed for child pornography offences. Anthony
Peter Luckwill, 31, from Carmarthen, was jailed for a total of 25 months at
Swansea Crown Court. Luckwill attached himself to a local branch of an
autism support group, claiming to suffer from Asperger's syndrome, and set
up a website. The society said trust "was abused in the most appalling way".

protect his identity. Andrew has Fragile X syndrome, which involves autism,
a learning disability and epilepsy. So he has very complex and particular
needs and is entitled to continuing care and support from the council by The

District Settles In Iowa Mistreatment Case
- A woman who claimed a
special-needs teacher mistreated her daughter has been awarded $30,000 in
a settlement with the Iowa City Community School District. Mary Colony,
33, will be paid by the district's insurers, said Superintendent Lane
Plugge. Colony claimed in the lawsuit in 2001 that Suzanne Falk, a
special-needs teacher at Hoover Elementary School, caused bruises and cuts
on Colony's 8-year-old daughter who has autism. Falk remains a teacher at
the school, Plugge said. |

Eleven Children Found Caged in Ohio Home -
Sheriff's deputies found 11 children locked in cages less than 3 1/2 feet
high inside a home, but a couple denied they had abused or neglected the
children. A judge on Monday put the children _ who range in age from 1 to 14
and who have various disabilities, including autism _ in foster homes. By
the AP

Children left in cages were well-fed, some say -
The 11 children removed from
a house where authorities say some of them slept in homemade cages are
polite, well-behaved, well-dressed and appear to have been well-fed,
neighbors and authorities said Tuesday. Their adoptive parents, Michael
Gravelle, 56, and Sharen Gravelle, 57, denied in a custody hearing Monday
that they abused or neglected the children, who are ages 1-14 and have
conditions that included autism and fetal alcohol syndrome. No charges had
been filed as of Tuesday afternoon, and messages left with the couple's
lawyer were not immediately returned. By the AP

Experts: Adoption screening may slacken with
hard-to-place children
-
The case of
11 adopted children who were living in one home, some sleeping in cages,
highlights the risk of easing up on screening for special needs children who
can be difficult to place, adoption experts say. "There's always a pressing
need to find homes for these children,'' Kevin Cohen, a Roslyn, N.Y.,
adoption attorney who himself was adopted, said Wednesday.Cohen said
disabled children require more work and patience from parents, and can be
the last picked for adoption, given that there are 130,000 children awaiting
permanent homes nationwide.

Parents of caged children want them back
/ The Ohio couple accused of keeping some of their 11 adopted children
in cages is breaking their silence and fighting to get their children
back. - The children were removed from the house of Michael and Sharen
Gravelle in September after a social services investigator spotted one
of the children in a cage. The children range in ages from 1 to 15, and
police say eight of them said they slept in cages that were less than 3
feet high. By ABC News |
 |
PERSPECTIVE: Caged children case causes state to review oversight
- The case of special needs children being kept in cages by their
adoptive parents has prompted a discussion about the way Ohio oversees
the children in its care. The director of the Ohio Department of Job and
Family Services says the state is investigating whether the system
worked properly when eleven children ages one to 14 with conditions such
as HIV and autism were placed with Michael and Sharen Gravelle of
Wakeman. Authorities say the couple put some of the children in homemade
wooden cages to sleep and as punishment during the day. |

Siblings not surprised about cage charges -
When Jesse and Jenna Gravelle heard the stories about a couple forcing
their 11 adopted children to sleep in cages, they weren't surprised to
hear their father and stepmother's names. What shocked them, Jesse
Gravelle said, was that adoption agencies would place children in
Michael and Sheron Gravelle's custody. "My dad and stepmother were
pretty much cruel and neglectful," Jesse Gravelle, now 32, said Friday.
"There were no cages," his sister Jenna Gravelle, 31, said in a separate
interview, but "both my brother and I felt like prisoners. We had to
fend for ourselves." The siblings described teenage years spent working
long hours to pay for food and rent at their father's home, and said
Jenna as a sixth-grader was temporarily removed from the home by social
services over allegations that their father inappropriately touched her.

Autism Society of America Blasts Ohio Family; Authorities Placing ...
"..."ASA is well aware of the difficulties families of individuals with
autism face with chronic and dangerous wandering. As with Alzheimer's
disease, persons with autism may wander into danger, often with tragic
results," said ASA president & CEO Lee Grossman. "To address the issue,
parents sometimes sleep in shifts; may resort to locks, bars and electronic
warning systems; and are even reported for or accused of neglect, resulting
in their children being placed in temporary foster care while they scramble
to defend their actions in court. Yet, certainly no one could ever suggest
that a child or adult be kept in a wooden cage to sleep in. Not for any
reason or under any circumstances," he concluded. Law enforcement and
criminal justice professionals will face an extremely difficult job as they
sort through the facts of this latest tragedy. Their best resources, when it
comes to the children in question, will be objective disability advocacy
groups. In the case of autism, ASA, with the support of its state and local
affiliates, is here to provide the necessary information and resources."

Caged Kids Photo Released
- An attorney for the parents who kept some of their 11
special-needs children in cages at night released photographs
showing the kids laughing and playing in a home full of toys and gifts
on holidays. Attorney David Sherman showed more than 20 photos to The
Plain Dealer to illustrate, he said,
how allegations
of neglect and abuse by his clients are unfounded.

HE WAS AN AUTISTIC GENIUS .. SHE WAS A BISEXUAL
FANTASIST. THE WEB BROUGHT THEM TOGETHER..THE WEB HELPED THEM FIND DEATH
- They were lonely strangers living
hundreds of miles apart until they met to die in Britain's first
internet suicide pact. Fiercely intelligent finance officer Chris Aston,
25, was a PhD student from a settled middle-class home diagnosed as a
child with Asperger's Syndrome, a form of autism. He overdosed four
years ago. Mentally unstable Maria Williams, 42, was a tormented
bisexual living in a graffiti- covered tower block. She lied to her
friends about contracting leukaemia and had previously tried to shoot
herself in the head, overdose and slash her wrists. In a different world
they would never have met to feed each other's anxieties. They may even
have survived their crises. Instead, they became hooked on sickening
suicide websites that advised them how to die and finally linked them in
death. They were found dead from carbon monoxide poisoning in a BMW in a
South London car park. Ashes of barbecue coal littered the passenger
footwell.By Daniel Boffey And Victoria Bone |

NB strategy failing autistic boy, Grit says
- The fact that an aggressive autistic teenager is being held at a
provincial jail -- even though he's done nothing wrong -- shows that New
Brunswick does not have the facilities it needs to deal with such
youths, the province's Opposition Liberal Leader said yesterday. Shawn
Graham was responding to published reports that revealed the 13-year-old
is living in a "jail compound" and will be sent out of Canada because
there is no institution in New Brunswick that can handle him. "It just
strikes home that this government does not have a strategy for dealing
with autistic children in the province of New Brunswick," Mr. Graham
said. The New Brunswick government is challenging the reports, stressing
that the boy is not in jail. By KEVIN BISSETT |

Stress And Aggression Reinforce Each Other At The Biological Level -
Scientists may be learning why it's so hard to stop the cycle of violence.
The answer may lie in the nervous system. There appears to be a fast,
mutual, positive feedback loop between stress hormones and a brain-based
aggression-control center in rats, whose neurophysiology is similar to
ours. It may explain why, under stress, humans are so quick to lash out
and find it hard to cool down. The findings, which could point to better
ways to prevent pathological violence, appear in the October issue of
Behavioral Neuroscience, which is published by the American Psychological
Association (APA) by

Teacher abuse worries parents of autistic
kids in NC - Parents commit an act
of faith every day when they send their children to school, trusting that
teachers and administrators will take proper care of their offspring. That's
especially true for parents of autistic children, some of whom can't speak
for themselves when trouble arises. And a couple of recent cases alleging
abuse by teachers are especially troubling for that reason by the AP |
