The debates and controversies have raged. Never before in history
has vaccine's been so controversial. Are we playing Russian
Roulette with our children, and if so, who is holding the gun?
It takes courage to tell mercury story
- In 1988 the St. Paul Pioneer Press Dispatch won the Pulitzer Prize for
feature writing. "AIDS in the Heartland" chronicled an AIDS patient from
diagnosis to death. Setting the Pioneer Press apart was more than simply
the passionate writing of reporter Jacqui Banaszynski. Great journalism
has an attitude.
Autism: Genetic Disorder Or Mercury Poisoning?
- Autism is defined as a developmental disability that by age three will
effect children's non-verbal and verbal communication. But, the
question that has yet to be answered is how these seemingly perfect
children come down with such a debilitating disorder? Dr. Sue
Anderson said year’s population studies have shown it's in their genes.
"There seems to be a genetic component. We know there are some families
in which more than one child is affected or first degree relatives are
affected," said Dr. Anderson, of the Kluge Children's Hospital. By

Can Childhood Vaccines Cause Autism?
- The debate is heating up over the cause of an alarming increase in the
number of childen with autism. Some parents blame childhood vaccines,
but federal health officials say there's no scientific proof of any
connection. Michaela Blaxill's parents say she was a normal baby, but
that changed. "Sometime between her first and second year of life she
slipped away, sort of quietly," says Michaela's father Mark Blaxill.
"She lost the speech she had begun to acquire, she started disconnecting
socially," he adds. By CBS4
Feuding Over Vaccines
- It's a situation Northern Virginia pediatrician James R. Baugh says he
and his partners find themselves confronting with increasing regularity:
A parent, usually a mother, refuses a scheduled immunization because she
has read on the Internet that it could cause her baby to develop autism.
"My last patient just did it," said Baugh, who estimates he and his 11
partners each grapple with parents who refuse some or all immunizations
about twice a month. Most recently, he said last week, the mother of a
2-month-old said she didn't want her daughter to receive the vaccine
against measles, mumps and rubella or any other immunization federal
health officials recommend to protect children from childhood diseases,
some of them fatal. By

The MMR sceptic who just doesn't understand science
/ Research is all about error. Either learn how to interpret data
yourself, or trust those who can do it for you. - Whatever you have been
told, science is not about certainty. And this creates problems for
those health professionals who are charged with interpreting and
relating data to the general public. We are expected to refute wholesale
misunderstandings, in a popular forum, to people who may well be
intelligent but who know nothing of evidence-based medicine, in
soundbite format. Health scares are like toothpaste: they're easy to
squeeze out, but very difficult to get back in the tube. On Monday, for
example, Melanie Phillips of the Daily Mail wrote yet another attack on
the MMR vaccine. She suggested that the journalists who trusted the new
Cochrane review, which shows that MMR is probably safe and not linked to
autism, were lazy stooges who took the press release at face value. By

A Battle Over the Link Between Vaccines and
Autism
- Scientists and consumer organizations disagree whether vaccinating
children is a factor with autism. The condition known as autism has
caused a heavyweight fight in children's healthcare. In one corner, are
scientists and pharmaceutical companies, claiming vaccines don't cause
autism. In the other corner, consumer organizations are saying there is
irrefutable evidence that some vaccinations do. Peter Hotez is a vaccine
researcher at George Washington University. "I conclude there is no
relationship between vaccines and autism. There is no relationship
between Thymerasol and autism. And I don't even believe that there is a
relationship between mercury and autism." Barbara Loe Fisher, of the
National Vaccine Information Center, says that after a quarter century
of vaccinations, evidence suggests otherwise. By Bill Wilson |

A byronchild world exclusive report -
On the eve of an historic, billion-dollar world vaccination campaign,
a leaked transcript ignites questions of vaccine safety and research
corruption. Meanwhile, US senators fast-track a bill to protect
vaccine manufacturers from litigation. With millions of lives at
stake, and billions of dollars to loose, will a merger of
philanthropy, big business and compromised science win an epic race
between corporate agendas and medical ethics? In this world exclusive
report, byronchild exposes how the most powerful medical
research bodies in the United States compromise their vaccine safety
research for vested interests, as they assist in a global vaccine
policy, while a bill looms in the background to protect it all. By

A family's crusade / Carthage couple say mercury agentin vaccines
caused son's autism - It started with him fidgeting, then continually
lining up toys and other objects. At times, he had emotional outbursts
far beyond what would be normal for the circumstances. He developed
allergies, eczema and asthma. Then, after a flu shot late in 2002, all of
those problems accelerated. "It all hit warp speed, just like in 'Star
Wars,'" said Lujene Clark. "Everything just became so dramatic, including
his behavior." Alan Clark, a 30-year emergency room physician, and Lujene
Clark, a former nurse, didn't recognize the symptoms in their 8-year-old
son, Devon. They were shocked when the formerly active, bright-eyed child
was diagnosed with a form of autism, and when they learned what they
believe is the cause by Susan Redden |

AUTISM - U.S.
GOVERNMENT VACCINE INJURY COURT UNCONSTITUTIONAL ....Illegal Statute
Exposed......Thousands of Vaccine Injured Children Are Without Legal Rights.
Autism is affecting hundreds of thousands of children. Thimerosal (a mercury
compound) was intentionally injected into children via baby vaccines in
order to increase pharmaceutical profits by way of reducing packaging costs.
The U.S. Government has an illegal (3) year statute of limitations provision
within the vaccine injury court that will dismiss injury cases filed by
parents seeking relief for their vaccine injured children by PRWeb |

Autism, ADD, ADHA - Vaccine Relate
- According to the most recent estimates by the CDC, about 1 in 150
children in the US suffers from an autistic disorder. Recent studies
have shown that exposure to mercury in childhood vaccines, not only
causes autism but can also result in immune, sensory, neurological,
motor, and behavioral dysfunctions similar to traits associated with
autism. Thimerosal is a vaccine preservative that was developed in the
1930s by Eli Lilly, and has been regularly used in vaccines ever
since. It contains 49.5% mercury. The amount of mercury considered
safe for adults, by the EPA is 0.1 microgram per kilogram of weight.
As a neurotoxin, thimerosal, has been linked to the depletion of the
protective anti-oxidant, glutathione, which helps rid the body of
mercury. People with autism seem to be more susceptible to this effect
and most have low levels of glutathione. Therefore, their bodies have
difficulty excreting mercury. By: Evelyn Pringle |

Autism - Mercury Poisoning, Epidemic levels breached ...How
Did This Happen?
The autism tragedy has reached epidemic levels in the U.S. and in
other countries. Affected children number in the hundreds of
thousands. - Every American child entering the public school
system is required to receive 21 specified vaccinations designed to
protect them from dangerous diseases. In his book, Mercury: The Winged
Messenger (now available at online booksellers), Courtney L. Zietzke
writes that a chemical added to those vaccines has exposed children to
dangerous levels of toxic mercury, that has caused debilitating autism
with the government’s full knowledge. Zietzke, who learned of this
dilemma after his own son became autistic after receiving 21
vaccinations before 16 months of age, has written Mercury: The Winged
Messenger to inform people about the intentional addition of a deadly
chemical to vaccines and the subsequent cover-up of this problem by
officials. The chemical additive Thimersoal has been added to
vaccinations intentionally in order to maximize pharmaceutical profits
from multi-dose vaccine bottles. Zietzke writes that about 50 percent
of Thimerosal is mercury, a chemical the U.S. government has known is
toxic since 1930. Despite clear warning signs and a sharp increase in
sudden child autism, the government is protecting drug companies,
Zietzke explains. / Press Release

Get Mercury Out Of Vaccines -- NOW!
- Mercury-based thimerosal, used as a preservative in childhood
vaccines until recently, is now being blamed for a host of
neurological problems, including autism, ADD, ADHD, and other learning
disabilities. The number of children with these problems can vary
greatly depending on who you listen to. Some experts say there are
about 800,000 learning disabled children in the US, while others put
the number as high as eight million, according to Dr. Jay Gordon. By

Autism – Mercury Poisoning in Thousands of Children.
U.S. Congress Probing Relationship Between FDA & Big Pharma
/ The U.S. Congress is finally starting to investigate the
possible conflict of interest connection between big pharma and the FDA.
Thousands of children have been vaccine injured from mercury laden baby
vaccines that were required for all school age children -- The U.S.
Congress has begun to investigate conflict of interest concerns between
big Pharma and the FDA. In a move to keep up public confidence, the U.S.
Congress has begun raising questions about the drug approval process.
Recently, questions began to surface about a host of drugs that are now
being pulled from the market because of cardiovascular damage that can
occur from continued use. The U.S. congress is examining in particular
the relationship that exists between the FDA, big pharma and the rapid
approval process that was employed in order to get these drugs to market.
The U.S. congress indicated that a “cozy” relationship exists. / Press

David Ayoub - Thimerosal Definite Cause Of Autism - To
what degree of scientific certainty can we prove that current epidemic
of autism was caused by the mercury-based preservative, thimerosal, in
childhood vaccines? In response to this question, David Ayoub,
MD, told Independent Media TV, ''I can state that the certainty of the
science supporting mercury as a major cause of autism is probably more
overpowering than the science behind any other disease process that I
studied dating back to medical school.'' “I think a disease that
effects more individuals than AIDS or cancer, in previously normal
infants and children,” he states, “has created a sense of urgency

EPA Calls For Mercury Reductions At Power Plants
- The Bush administration this week called for the nation's
coal-burning power plants to cut their mercury emissions by 50% over
the next 15 years. While the move is hailed in some quarters as

Expelling mercury from science labs / Schools finding safe alternatives
- As mercury spills in schools disrupt classes, teachers and
environmental groups want to rid student labs of the versatile but
dangerous metal. In recent weeks, mercury was found in stairwells and
corridors of a high school in the nation's capital. The building had
to be closed twice for decontamination. Although the spills get
headlines, the use of mercury in schools actually is declining, said
Ken Roy, a physics teacher in Glastonbury, Connecticut, and
co-chairman of the National Science Teachers Association's safety
advisory board. "The awareness is so high now that I would say a good
part of it (mercury) is gone from schools," Roy said. "The problem
comes when a teacher retires, and someone new comes in and finds a
horde of it in a cabinet in a chemical storeroom. You've got to dig
for it." |

Fox Does Environmental Story - But They Didn't Have An Environmenta list
- Yesterday on Studio B with Jane Skinner filling in for Shepard Smith, she
interviewed Dr. Stephen Garner with the St. Vincent's Catholic Medical
Center about the poisonous water and sludge that now fills New Orleans.
Skinner reported that 5 people so far have died from water born diseases.
She said that this may really turn into an environmental disaster if you
believe what some toxicologists are saying. Skinner said that the water is
being pumped out could end up in the lake, the Gulf or even the Mississippi.
The following is paraphrased, but pretty much verbatim: Dr. Stephen Garner:
Your damned if you do, your damned if you don't. (Comment: Is this how
Catholic doctor's talk?) You have this toxic material that not only has
sewage but all kinds of chemicals from the factories and the petroleum
plants and heavy metals. All known as carcinogenics. Cancer causing agents. You have it flooding the streets, seeping into the ground, you've got to get rid of it. The best place is to pump it into the lake. Okay, granted, not a great choice to pollute the lake but the lake gradually cleans itself through the Gulf of Mexico (Comment: And this is acceptable?) |

Further evidence refuting link between MMR vaccine and autism, The Lancet
- A UK study published in this week’s issue of THE LANCET (p 963)
provides further evidence that measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) immunisation is
not associated with the development of autism or other pervasive
developmental disorders (PDDs) in children. Public concern that MMR
vaccination might cause autism has led to a fall in vaccine coverage
before age 2 years, from around 92% in 1995-6 to 82% in 2002-3. Liam
Smeeth (London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, UK) and colleagues
did a ‘case-control’ study to compare the rate of MMR vaccination among
children who later developed autism or other PDDs (cases) with children
who did not develop PDDs (controls).

Inoculating against fear
- Inoculating against fear - Doctors face parental concerns about the
growing number of childhood vaccinations - When Shawn Eisenberg was
born three years ago, her father, David, believed immunizing her
against disease "was probably one of the biggest decisions I can make
about the health of my child." After what he considered careful
research, he picked which vaccines his daughter would receive and
when. Eisenberg refused to let Shawn be vaccinated for hepatitis B at
birth because he felt her lifestyle did not put her at risk. And
Shawn didn't receive the Haemophilus influenzae type B (Hib) vaccine
at 2, 4 and 6 months as recommended by the Department of Health and
Human Services. The Old Bethpage father plans to take the same steps
with his infant son, Kevin. Eisenberg isn't alone. About one-third of
U.S. children were found to be under-vaccinated for more than six
months, according to a study published last week in the Journal of the
American Medical Association. And one-fourth experienced delays in
receiving many of the recommended vaccines during their first 24
months of life. By Debbe Geiger |

It takes courage to tell mercury story
- "...A story worth telling? About the time "AIDS in the Heartland" was
appearing in the Pioneer Press, the number of children diagnosed with
autism was one in 10,000. Today, the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention pegs the number at one in 166. During that time, the number
of immunizations on the childhood vaccination schedule more than
doubled, raising the dosage of mercury, a known neurotoxin, far above
federal safety standards. New York Times contributor David Kirby's book
"Evidence of Harm," released in April, presented both sides of the
thimerosal controversy in a documentary manner, allowing evidence (or
absence of comment) to speak for itself. The resulting picture is that
of knowledgeable parents and independent researchers challenging a
stonewalled government and scientific establishment that relies on
after-the-fact epidemiological studies, not before-the-fact safety data,
to deny the autism link. |

Health Check: 'How was the MMR scare sustained for so long when the evidence
showed that it was unfounded?' - Most people have heard of Andrew
Wakefield, the doctor from the Royal Free Hospital in London whose research
on children with bowel disease and autism triggered the MMR scare. Fewer
will know of Richard Horton, the editor of The Lancet, which published the
infamous paper in 1998. For six years Horton has been in the eye of the
storm as the controversy has raged around him. Now he has published a book,

Local couple sues drug giants over child vaccine - If a lawsuit
filed by an Athens area couple against several major pharmaceutical
companies ever gets before a jury, it could be the first suit over the
controversial vaccine preservative Thimerosal to go to trial in the
United States. That's according to Texas attorney James C. Ferrell,
who's representing Philip and Julie Foster of Selby Road, the parents
of a 6-year-old boy, in their lawsuit against drug giant Eli Lilly and
some two dozen other corporations, filed last October in Athens County
Common Pleas Court.
The suit alleges that the boy has suffered "devastating injuries" from
being injected with Thimerosal, a mercury-based compound used as a
preservative in packages of childhood vaccine. Some researchers have
suggested a link between Thimerosal's use to preserve vaccines and a
sharp rise in autism among children during the 1990s, though the
available studies so far are reportedly not conclusive. By Jim

Local Mom To Protest Use Of Mercury In Vaccines
/ Oak Park Woman Says Thimerasol May Have Made Her Son Autistic -
More than 70 autism advocacy groups are converging on Capitol Hill to
publicize what they’re calling an autism epidemic. As Medical Editor
Mary Ann Childers reports, one demonstrator is a mother of three from
Oak Park who has a very personal reason for making the trip.
Six-year-old Charlie Blakely is autistic. His mother is convinced it’s
because of a mercury-based preservative called Thimerasol in childhood
vaccines. “We want to be able to protect our children from disease, but
we're not going to inject our children with mercury in order to do
that,” said Christina Blakely. By Mary Ann Childers |

Mayo Clinic Study Suggests No Link Between Autism And
Immunizations - Over the
past 20 years, there has been speculation about a connection between
immunizations and an increase in autism. However, a study by Mayo Clinic

changes in diagnostic criteria and availability of services, not
environmental factors or immunizations. |

Merck's infant vaccine stirs new controversy
- Company said it had stopped using mercury preservative but kept
distributing stockpile for two more years - Merck & Co. continued
to supply infant vaccine containing a mercury preservative for two
years after declaring that it had eliminated the chemical. In
September 1999, amid concern about the risks of mercury in childhood
vaccines, Merck announced that the Food and Drug Administration had
approved a preservative-free version of its hepatitis B vaccine. "Now,
Merck's infant vaccine line is free of all preservatives," a Merck
news release said. But Merck continued to distribute vaccine
containing thimerosal until October 2001, according to an FDA letter
sent in response to a congressional inquiry. - LA Times |

Mercury, Coal and Bush, Oh My
- An article in this month's Discover magazine (read the whole
great thing
here) outlines the woes of Mercury and what we as a world are and
are not doing about it. Tying most of the mercury woes to industrial
waste, and more specifically waste from coal burning power generation
plants, the articles is a stunning slap to the noggin. We are ignoring
the waste and the effects of mercury at our peril. If we don't take
drastic measures to stem that pollution and its long term effects from
even small dose exposure to this dangerous chemical vapor, then we
face a path of industrial pollution and environmental ruin that may
very well be impossible to fix. The Clinton administration proposed
reducing mercury emissions in power plants by 90 percent by 2008. But,
thinking he knew better, Bush has decided to slow that wagon down and
instead is proposing to reduce those emissions by 70 percent by 2018,
as well as to shun the Kyoto protocol, a world wide treaty to stem
ozone layer eroding emissions (of which mercury is certainly one of) I
would hate to think that business and industry concerns from Big Coal
and Big Oil guided him in those decisions. By Majikwah

Mercury fight -
Because
mercury is concentrated in fish, people are routinely cautioned to
limit their intake of, or avoid entirely, predator varieties such as
shark, swordfish, orange roughy and tuna. Warnings to avoid eating
much freshwater fish have also been posted at major inland bodies of
water in New Hampshire. Mercury causes nerve damage and affects
people’s cardiovascular and immune systems. It is especially dangerous
in pregnant women, as it can cause permanent memory and language
problems in children. It has also been linked to autism. Last year,
the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reported that from 1999 to
2000 630,000 newborn babies in the United States had unsafe levels of
mercury in their blood. Mercury is nasty stuff. / Editorial |

Mercury in Air Pollution: A Link to Autism?
- Can mercury in air pollution cause autism? Nobody knows. But a new
study suggests it's worth a look. Mercury is one heck of a toxic
substance. A fraction of a teaspoon can render all the fish in a
20-acre lake unsafe to eat. A recent Institute of Medicine study found
no link between the tiny amounts of mercury in
childhood vaccines and autism.

evidence, the MMR vaccine (measles, mumps and rubella) is not at all
linked to autism. The research also indicated that it is not linked to
other developmental problems. In 1995, 92% of UK kids had the MMR vaccine.
Then there was a scare. Numbers dropped to 82% in 2002. Dr Liam Smeeth,
London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, study leader, said "We
have found no convincing evidence that MMR vaccination increases the risk
of autism. No significant association has been found in rigorous studies

voicing concern at the lower numbers of children having the MMR vaccine.
They worry that the number of people getting measles, mumps and rubella

Parents Say Vaccines Are a Possible Link
- The girl on the videotape looks like a typical toddler on a good
day. She nestles comfortably in her grandfather's arms, smiling and
saying "Bye bye" and "Papa." She stands before a mirror, admiring
herself while wearing a hat, and then utters, "Uh oh" when the hat
falls off. She places the hat on the head of her mother, who is
working the video camera. And she smiles and hugs the knees of her
grandfather. That was Emma Murphy at 21 months, a little over two
years ago. Today, she seems an entirely different person. The Lakeland
girl doesn't talk, wears a constant blank expression and shies from
physical contact. No one knows what causes autism, the disorder that
afflicts Emma. But Emma's parents can't help wondering about a link
between the vaccinations Emma received in her first months of life and
the dramatic change that followed, including the loss of her budding
vocabulary. By Gary White |

Rhetoric on mercury in vaccines ignores facts
- Twice in recent
months (Feb. 9 and March 16), columnist Craig Westover has done your
readers a great disservice by alleging mercury in childhood vaccines
causes autism. The sources he has cited have been far from as
"objective" and "unbiased" as he has claimed. Westover clearly has not
looked at all the facts and available information on the subject.
While the actual causes of autism are unclear, the overwhelming body
of scientific research says mercury in childhood vaccines does not
cause autism. One of the clearest pieces of evidence that we have is
that in Denmark, when thimerosal (the mercury-containing compound
previously used as a preservative in vaccines) was removed from all
childhood vaccines 10 years ago, autism rates continued to rise
sharply, even among children 2 to 4 years old who received only
mercury-free vaccines. / Opinion - Hull is the Minnesota state

Scientists dismiss evidence of MMR link with autism
- SCIENTISTS have strongly rejected any suggestion that the measles,
mumps and rubella vaccine, MMR, is linked to disorders such as autism.
An analysis of 31 MMR studies by the Cochrane Library, the most
authoritative source of evidence-based medicine, has shown no credible
grounds for claims of serious harm. NI_MPU ('middle'); Uptake of the
vaccine decreased sharply after research by Andrew Wakefield, published
in The Lancet in 1998, suggested a direct causal link between autism and

Senate proposal focuses on vaccines, autism
- Scientists disagree about link between mercury and
developmental disorder. - Although some scientists disagree about
the relationship between autism and vaccines containing mercury,
Republican Sen. Wayne Kuipers of Holland doesn't want to take any
chances. His legislation would prohibit vaccines containing more than 1
microgram of mercury from being used in Michigan. Autism is a
developmental disorder that affects social interaction and communication
skills, usually appearing during the first three years of a child's
life. According to the Autism Society of America, as many as 1.5 million
Americans suffer from the disease, with treatment at an estimated annual
cost of $90 billion.
